As you already know, we can tell a lot about your pets health from a physical exam - but it can't tell us everything. Even our own physicians give us requisitions for lab work at our yearly physicals. At Sherwood Veterinary Clinic we not only offer general health screening, but we also provide a variety of diagnostic testing for many conditions. Unlike human medicine, however, we can give you results in as soon as 20 minutes.

We provide many in house diagnostics so that we can provide you with answers and your pet the targeted treatment they deserve as quickly and efficiently as possible. Here are a few examples of the capabilities our technicians provide

CBC

A Complete Blood Count allows us to asses the health, quality, and quantity of the blood cells themselves. This test can help us identify many conditions, including

  • Anemia

  • Blood Clotting Abilities

  • Certain Types of Cancer

  • Dehydration

  • Infection

  • Parasitic & Allergic Reactions and more...

Blood Chemistry

A Blood Chemistry Panel allows us to assess certain hormone levels and chemical balances to help us assess the function of the organs. There are so many things we can learn from a Chemistry Panel that it would impossible to list them all here, but some of the more common assessments we perform are for

  • Blood Glucose Values

  • Hormonal Abnormalities

  • Liver & Kidney Function

  • Pancreatic Enzymes

  • Thyroid levels

Our team is happy to include a group of practiced Registered Veterinary Technicians who work 7 days a week so that we are able to manually analyse fresh urine samples in clinic. Our technicians are trained to perform microscopic analysis and identify any particles that may indicate certain medical conditions that can be dangerous, painful, or even in some cases fatal to your pet

  • Crystals

  • Diabetes

  • Kidney Failure

  • Urinary Tract Infections

Our technicians are able to perform microscopic analyses of many other types of samples as well, including

  • Ear Swabs

  • Fecal Samples

  • Fine Needle Aspirates

  • Impression Smears

  • Parasite Identification

  • Skin Scrapings

  • Tape Smears & More

Sherwood Veterinary Clinic houses a high quality Digital Radiograph system that allows us to take images in house and process them instantly for quick diagnosis. Our digital x-ray also is able to limit the amount of radiation your pet is exposed to, and has a much higher safety rating than old film units. While no machine is infallible, our staff utilizes their expertise in order to provide higher quality x-rays and decrease radiation exposure by

  • Determining machine values based specifically on your individual pets measurements

  • Assessing the minimum amount of exposure required for different densities of body areas being x-rayed

  • Digitally enhance images to prevent retakes

  • Integrated Software for Stat Specialist Reporting within 60 minutes or less

  • 2 forms of image backup

We also have our own Digital Dental X-ray for general cleaning and extraction assessments.

While we emphasize the testing we are able to provide in house, there are cases where advanced and specialized testing is the most appropriate. for this reason, we have partnered with Idexx Reference Laboratories so that we may collect any additional samples in house and send them off to the lab for further testing. Below are just a few examples of the more common tests we send out

  • Vaccines Titre Testing

  • Culture & Sensitivity

  • Allergy Testing

  • Complex Disease Processes Specific Testing

  • Lyme Disease Testing

  • Tumor Analysis & More

While we do not have an ultrasonographer on staff, we have partnered with FVS Ultrasound Imaging to provide an in-house option for clients who may need an ultrasound performed. We are able to call in a Clinical Veterinary Sonographer to travel with his ultrasound equipment to our facilities Monday-Thursday so that clients are not forced to travel to emergency clinics or pay emergency transfer fees. Through this service, we are able to provide ultrasounds for

  • Abdomen

  • Thorax

  • Heart (Echocardiograms)

  • Neck region
